Ensuring Safer Tomorrow: An Initiative Towards Electrical Safety

The event had Mr.Shreegopal Kabra, Chairman and Managing Director, RR Global, as chief guest. Among the eminent speakers was Industry expert & accomplished electrical consultant Mr. Ajit Kulkarni and also Assistant Divisional fire officer Mr. D S Patil from the Fire department, Mumbai. More than 100 electrical contractors participated in the seminar.

It’s a fact today that electrical safety is one of the most crucial elements and it starts from product selection, installation to regular maintenance. With increasing awareness, it is essential to understand industry standards, market insights, and trends in electrical safety to make electrical practices safer and safer for the future. This event was held to make the contractor fraternity more aware, active, and responsible in terms of Electrical safety. Secretary ECAM. He shared information about ECAM and also announced four more upcoming events with the association of IECT Magazine in the coming year. While quoting “Electricity is a good servant but a bad master”, he addressed the severity of this issue and stated that the responsibility of electrical safety is part of all electrical contracting and consulting fraternity. He also added that ECAM is the oldest electrical contractor association in India and it will constantly work towards the betterment of this sector.

Further to this, Mr. D S Patil, Assistant Divisional fire officer shared his valuable insights and experiences towards fire caused due to electrical system malfunctions. He said, “With our duty, we have to face fire accidents every day while doing that the most critical issue is dangers due to electricity”. He shared various stats and cases regarding some of the horrifying fire outbreaks in Mumbai city and also showed how electrical installations, irregular service & maintenance are responsible in major cases. He added that strikingly more than 76% of the fire outbreaks happen due to malfunction of electrical installations. Post his insights from more than 25 years of dedicated service, he invited Mr. Rohan More, Station officer, Memonwada fire station, Mumbai to give further information on the topic. Mr. More said, “I believe that safety is a joint responsibility, if we join hands together we can make a better future and better India”. He also announced various initiatives started by the Mumbai fire brigade such as mini fire stations, changes in fire safety compliances, etc. This session gave in-depth insights to the audience from a fire fighters’ perspective which was highly useful.

Further to this, Mr. Ajit Kulkarni, Director, Ajit Kulkarni Consultants Pvt. Ltd, shared his knowledge and experience in electrical installation practices. He discussed various on-point topics and showcased some of the shocking realities of amateur& irresponsible electrical installations. His informative. The presentation had snapped some live examples of how electrical installations are taken lightly throughout our country. “Can we not handle electricity? Nearly 15,000 small and big fires have taken place in Mumbai City in the last three years, out of which around 12,000 fires occurred due to electricity and strikingly 59 people die every day because of such accidents.

Who is responsible for this? And the answer is only we, we the whole electrical industry stakeholders starting from manufacturers, consultants, contractors and all of us” He said with deep concern towards this topic. He established that small efforts towards the betterment of our services can make a huge change. He said electrical standards should be adhered to as bible, Kuran& Bhagwat Geeta for any electrical contractor. His presentation touched down on various issues which are generally easily ignored and have a major effect on safety. He also emphasized, “Don’t compromise on quality & installation for price and if that is the case then just don’t accept the work in the first place”. He ended the session while saying “We are empowered by government & people being licensed electrical contractors and it’s our responsibility to ensure that we are respecting this authority”

After this, the expert team from RR Kabel displayed their products and provided detailed guidelines in terms of the selection of the right wires & cables. Mr.Shreegopal Kabra, President & Managing director RR Kabel, the chief guest for the seminar delivered an inspirational speech. He addressed this issue from a business perspective which made it more realistic & easy to understand. He started with the basic concept of the electrical trade. He said, “All of us are in the business of ‘ Satisfaction to the People.’ Once we are convinced that the ultimate aim of doing business is to satisfy the customer, then almost all our problems will be resolved”. He emphasized customer-centricity to ensure electrical safety. “Today the business of electrical contracting is going down day by day. This is due to petty things like undue competition, L1 theory, sub-standard material, and bad services.

These things do not give more money but they ruin your business. Everyone indeed needs money. But if money comes with dignity and respect, and not by cheating by bad practices, we will not be facing the loss of human lives and properties” He added. He constantly stressed how electricity is the baseline for all of us and how dangerous it is to take it for granted and one should not get a good night’s sleep if the installations, materials are of sub-standard quality.
